Unlocking Safer
and more Inclusive
Maternity Care

It is unacceptable that

  • Problems of high maternal deaths and severe disease in Black and Asian women persist today, with unchanging rates since 2014.
  • 1 in 9 pregnancy-associated deaths are due to severe or intersectional disadvantages. The evidence shows that these disadvantages are principally owed to a combination of mental ill health and social factors.
  • At the intersection between poor perinatal mental health and complex social needs, clinicians still require solutions that can facilitate proactive intervention, preventing future maternal adversity and deaths.

Meet the Team

We are a team of driven engineers, scientists and NHS clinicians on a mission to close the health inequality gap in maternity care through health innovation that is equitable by design.

Sandra Nwokeoha, DPhil, MEng

Founder

Sandra is a passionate biomedical engineer with significant experience in health technologies, from proof-of-concept generation to implementation into healthcare systems. She holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Oxford and a MEng from Queen Mary University of London. She is currently a 2024 NHS Clinical Entrepreneur and a part-time Consultant at the World Health Organization.

Keen to help improve the livelihoods of the least-regarded in society by using her skills and expertise, Sandra joined the 2022 Year Here Fellowship programme where she worked within a group of GP practices in East London. There she intimately experienced the challenges that NHS staff face in supporting patients at risk of adverse outcomes, more so in the most vulnerable stages of a woman’s life – maternity. Fueled by the pains of the women and communities that have held her up irrespective of their sufferings, she founded Ellescope in 2023.
